Japanese Electronic Or Points
Ignition For Zephyrs and Consuls

"I
have successfully and easily fitted a Nissan 280z six Electronic dizzy into my
Mk1 Zephyr.
It fits into the engine without any machining, and turns the correct direction.
You can either use a points or electronic dizzy from the L series 6 cylinder
Nissans, although the 4 cylinder 200B dizzy will fit the Consuls.
The bottom drive cog is removed and replaced with the Zephyr drive head; the
roll pins are different size so the factory hole will need to be redrilled
(same hole) to the larger Zephyr roll pin.
There may be a piece of alloy casting that will need to be ground off to clear
the engine block and smoothed with Devcon/epoxy if required.
The base clamp will need to be modified, I welded the Zephyr one to the Nissan
one and ground it to fit, just ensure the dizzy is locating properly into the
oil pump drive.
When selecting a dizzy check operation of the Vacuum advance unit and if using
the electronic unit note they are prone to falling to pieces internally under
the pickup coil and the magnet ring can be cracked causing a weak trigger
pulse. I have found a supply of the magnets in the US, the last biggie is the
electronic module, which costs $125 AU to replace if faulty, but I have seen a
cheap Bosch type module fitted to a '84 2.4 efi hatch dizzy.
For a cheap, reliable, modern (almost) dizzy it is a good option and the points
option can be used if you want to keep the positive earth system.
I hope this is useful,"

(Do
double check the dimensions of the replacement distributor housing and
shaft diameter as they fit into the Ford block and oil pump as well as the
length of these distributor parts as they compare to the stock Consul or Zephyr
6, consult a Nissan workshop wiring diagram or any good Auto sparky for wiring
details. Most modules follow the same design, if grabbing one from a
wrecking yard, grab the harness or write down the wiring scheme and wire
colours to guide you.)
Note
from site manager: I will be adding to 55zed's article with a write up on
adapting other model distributors to our engines. Also bear in mind a lot of
the basic electronic modules are universal, even between 4, 6 and V8 engines.
Another type of module could therefore be wired in if need be. I will also be
covering the aftermarket systems and improvements to standard systems on the
cheap. Stay posted. Karl (Low Zep).
