could be removed easily with a little bit of scrubbing& For years I have wanted to find something that would just get rid of rust entirely without  neutralising it or  encapsulating it and without having to mechanically grind or wire-wheel it off. Particularly in areas that are inaccessible to other means. There is of course sandblasting which <span class=GramE>does an excellent job of rust removal but my recent experiences have not been</span> ideal because actual  sand blasting is banned now for health reasons so the operators use various other media such as hardened steel grits or crushed glass which damages the surface of mild steel components. <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p style='margin-right:3.75pt'><span style='font-size:14.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma","sans-serif"'>When fixing up old cars there are three things which regularly need removing in order to restore the original condition of components: <u>crud</u>, <u>paint</u> and <u>rust</u>. To remove them efficiently requires only three chemicals, a few beers and some spare time. <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p style='margin-top:0cm;margin-right:0cm;margin-bottom:0cm;margin-left:35.25pt; margin-bottom:.0001pt'><u><span style='font-size:14.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma","sans-serif"'>Crud</span></u><span style='font-size:14.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma","sans-serif"'>- sodium hydroxide (lye) solution attacks most substances found on old car parts. <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p style='margin-top:0cm;margin-right:0cm;margin-bottom:0cm;margin-left:35.25pt; margin-bottom:.0001pt'><u><span style='font-size:14.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma","sans-serif"'>Paint</span></u><span style='font-size:14.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma","sans-serif"'>- methylene chloride paint stripper removes most paint without too much hard work <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p style='margin-left:35.25pt'><u><span style='font-size:14.0pt;font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"'>Rust</span></u><span style='font-size:14.0pt;font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"'>- hydrochloric acid (spirits of salts) efficiently removes rust <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p style='margin-right:10.5pt'><span style='font-size:14.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma","sans-serif"'>These three chemicals are relatively inexpensive and can be found within a short distance of each other in the paint section of any good hardware store. Parts with spot-welded seams should be treated very carefully to ensure no acid remains trapped between the parts. Just washing off with water is not <span class=GramE>sufficient,</span> it must be neutralized fully to prevent future issues. Heat seams up with a heat-gun to ensure all liquid is boiled out prior to painting.
