Home Made 2 Barrel Intake
Manifold
By Karl Schluter -Low Zep
(This
plan is for a MKlll Zephyr manifold, although similar could be made up for
earlier or 4 cylinder cars)
Using
a standard Mklll Zephyr (213E) intake manifold (A) go to your nearest speed
shop etc and locate a 2 barrel to one barrel alloy adaptor (as in B).
Cut
mid way through the adaptor (as in C) and have your nearest engineering shop
weld the two together, keeping the adaptor slightly positioned to the outside
of the manifold (as in E) relative to the original carburettor mounting point.
Then
with a Die grinder, or similar, open up the area inside the manifold (the
shaded area in D). Now is a good time to match the intake ports on the manifold
to the ports in the head. I also don’t recommend using the tin gaskets that are
in some sets. You will find this manifold doesn’t have the icing up problems of
the other after market manifolds. However, you can make a heater for this
manifold by using a length of tube around 10cm long of the right diameter of
the original hockey stick exhaust manifold. Blocking the tubes ends (with frost
plugs or similar tack welded in) this insert can be put in place when the
manifold is bolted on to help exchange heat to the bottom of the manifold,
similar to the original exhaust set up.
The
Webers I recommend you run with this manifold, are a 32/36 DGAV staged opening
carb. Or if you can locate a 28/36 DCD. Do make sure to use a good quality
in-line fuel filter near the carburettor as well.
I
do recommend the carburettor is set up on a rolling road for optimum
performance and economy.
