Chris Gaines 1971 396 Mk4 Zephyr
This
is my 1971 Mk4 Zephyr I have owned it for about 17 yrs. It has had a lot of
changes over the year. I brought it cheap because of a big dent in the roof
which I pushed out! It originally came with a 2.5 V6 engine which I changed for
a 3.5 Rover engine. After a couple of years I got fed up with that engine so I
fitted a 351ci Windsor lump. I then got hold of a 351ci Cleveland with 4bolt
mains.
I
completely rebuilt this engine but due to a bit of bore wash from a knackered
power valve in the carb, it didn't last to long so I now have a 396ci bored
30thou big block Chevy.
The
engine originally came from a 1966 Chevy Chevelle, it has closed chamber oval
port heads, Edelbrock RPM intake manifold, 750 vac sec Holley carb, Flowkooler
water pump, allory Unilite electronic distributor, topped off with a 250hp NOS
plate system.
The
gearbox is a turbo th350 which I modified to take an extra drive disc &
release fluid quicker by drilling the drive plate drum, the instructions for
this I found in a 1974 edition of HOTROD
magazine.
The
back axle is a Lincoln Continental cut down from 72" to 40", it is
fitted with a Detroit locker & 4.11 gears. The suspension is home made
front wishbones with 1970 GTO uprights & discs. The rear has standard
shocks with ladder bars, it has air ride suspension all round. The brakes on
the rear are Mercedes discs with Citroen BX calipers. It has twin master
cylinders and 2 BMW servo's.The outer body is almost standard apart from no
rear handles although the back doors do open & a rear wing added to the
rear boot..
The chassis is 3"x2"
box section with galvanized floor, and a 8 point roll cage.
The interior is black tuck-n-roll with blue piping and the dash is digital,
Fitted out with Nordskog digital
gauges.
Wheels
at the rear14x15 Rodlite alloys fitted with 18.5x15 Mickey Thompson tyres, the
fronts are 4x15 Rodlite wheels with 155x15 tyres. Fastest et to date is 13.9
110 mph
I hope you like it .(Tubs)
