FORD CONSUL, ZEPHYR, ZODIAC MKl AND ll 1950-62

By Brooklands Books, compiled by R M Clarke.

ISBN 1 85520 0589

Soft cover

104 pages.

This book has 33 articles including pieces on the Ute, Convertible and Stationwagon cars. It includes period road tests from English, Australian, American and South African magazines and is full of black and white photos. Sadly the only colour ones are on the cover! However, this does not detract from the book as a whole. It also has 2 articles on Raymond Mays fitted cars. This is an easy to read book however it was quite expensive for a soft cover book by the time it got to New Zealand where I live. It is available through Brooklands Books at

http://www.brooklands-books.com/pages/fordeuroznz.html

And the order code is A-F050 at 9.95 pounds sterling, or you can order it through your local good bookstore with the quoted ISBN number.

By Brooklands Books

Compiled by R M Clarke

ISBN 1 85520 0643

Soft Cover

Pages 104

This is another in the series of Brookland road tests books. It follows the earlier MKl and ll book with tests from Auto car, Motor Sport, Motor life, Road and track, Practical Classics and other magazines old and present. It has excellent Black and White photos and includes tests on Stationwagon cars (MKlV) and Executive as well as V4 cars and the Consul replacement, the Zephyr 4. Included in the book is a used car test as well as a 12,000 mile report and buying used article. Overall this book matches the standards set by the previous book and would suit any enthusiast’s collection.

CONSUL, ZEPHYR, ZODIAC, EXECUTIVE Fords MKl-lV

By Michael Allen

ISBN 0-947981-42-X

Published by Motor Racing Publications Ltd

Hard Back

Pages 256

This sort after book, made up of 8 chapters plus appendix’s which include colour schemes and production figures, cover the complete range from MKl-MKlV. I found this book to be an excellent source of prototype photos and text made up of the development successes and failures during the manufacture of these cars. The book also includes a history of the cars in competition and rallying. A whole chapter is devoted to the unusual (for its time) 4wd MKlV by Harry Ferguson research Ltd. There is also a list of clubs and spare specialists which while may be a bit out of date could still be very useful.

The book was revised and extended in 1990, I have been told it is now out of print. However, searching through the net (this July 2002), I located my new copy from

www.pitstop.net.au order code 8778

Who were excellent to deal with! I have seen these books go for up to $70 NZ dollars years ago. I got my book for $44.95 Australian (includes GST not payable if outside Aus) or $19.95 pounds UK. Another site to try for this book is Books International at

HOW TO MAKE YOUR CAR HANDLE

By Fred Puhn

ISBN: 0-912656-46-8

Pages: 200

This is one of the series of HP Books. It covers everything from Tyres through to suspension tuning and brakes. These are also broken up into more detail as in modifications for road or track use, that you can do to your road car. I myself have put many ideas from in this book, into my own car. It is well written and explains the reason behind roll bars, springs, steering, tyre sizes and trouble shooting. It also has useful formulas for setting your car up. While it is written with American cars in mind, a car is a car to a certain point so this book is definitely of good use to anyone wanting to know the reasons behind modifications and where to start. A good book that covers a subject not always taken into account on modified cars.

The book is available from any good bookstore and can be ordered on the net through www.Amazon.com for around $13 USD.
